2008 Awards

LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR: Ellen Fockler (Washoe County School District)

Ellen was given this award in honor of her countless and selfless years of service to the Washoe County School District Libraries and to countless other libraries in Northern Nevada. After serving as an Elementary School Librarian and as the Swope Middle School Librarian, Ellen has served as the District Library Coordinator/ Title I Coordinator for over 11 years. Quiet and effective, she moved the libraries towards Library 2.0 by serving on the District Technology Committee. Through her work on the Nevada Writing Project and the Nevada Reading Week Project, she has greatly impacted the literacy programs in Nevada. She is not only a member of NLA, NYRA, MPA, AASL and ALA but has been actively serving on various committees for several years. Ellen makes a difference and deserves this award!

All of the following individuals tirelessly served the Nevada Library Association for many years. They have worked with great enthusiasm and dedication and have been exceptional advocates for, and friends of, Nevada's libraries. Because of their perseverance and leadership, library service in Nevada has been significantly improved and expanded. For these reasons, they were honored with this award:

DOROTHY MCALINDEN AWARD Florica Hagendorn (Henderson District Public Libraries)

Florica has worked in public libraries in Southern Nevada for nearly two decades, introducing children to the love of reading and learning. She is famous for her innovative children's programs- such as "Reading with Rover"; the "Young Scientists' Series"; the "Teen Talent Contest" and the "Aspiring Young Authors' at the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District and at the Henderson Libraries. She has been actively involved in the Nevada Library Association for many years both as a Chair of the ACTION and the NSCLS Committees and has been a presenter at many conferences. Florica's passion for libraries and the difference that they can make in a child's life is beyond compare. She leaves no stone unturned as she works throughout the community looking for support for various programs and reading initiatives. She truly deserves this award!

SPECIAL CITATION: Joan Vaughan (Henderson District Public Libraries)

Joan was commended this year for all of the years that she has served as the Nevada Library Association's Webmaster. For many years, she has provided a top-notch website for NLA members. She spends countless hours updating this site so she was commended for all of her time and efforts on behalf of libraries in Nevada!
